The Law Firm of Morgan Rooks PC is a law firm that fights against sexual harassment and sex discrimination in the workplace in Camden and Burlington Counties and the surrounding areas. The attorneys at The Law Firm of Morgan Rooks PC were offended about a recent report where defense attorneys engaged in victim-blaming seriously. Let’s take a look at the latest report.
John Bramnick’s Promise to “Discredit” Accusers
John Bramnick, a high-ranking Republican in the New Jersey Assembly, faced controversy in early October 2019. His law firm’s website made a promise to help clients who claim to be wrongly accused of sexual assault by seeking out their accusers and refuting their claims. Bramick’s law firm, Bramnick, Rodrigues, Grabas, Arnold, & Mangan, made these claims in a section of their website titled “Sexual Assault.” “We know, unfortunately, people accuse other of these types of crimes because of hurt feelings, or in anger over breaking up or even confusion over what actually happened,” the section read. It continued – “we will investigate your case and seek to discredit your accuser.” Wow. This law firm actually said that they would seek to discredit the victims of sexual assault.
After New Jersey Globe reported that the law firm sought to discredit victims of sexual assault, the law firm pulled the portion of the site that was highlighted, which included a list of possible defense strategies when charged with sexual assault. While Bramnick defended the action by claiming the statement was “poorly written,” general pushback from the upset public found the language disturbing and the subsequent deletion to be a political move for Bramnick and his running mate, Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz, to save face before the upcoming re-election. Bramnick remained steadfast in his defense as Anjali Mehrotra, President of the National Organization for Women of New Jersey, was vocally opposed and Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy regarded the language as “disgusting and unacceptable.”
Victim Blaming Beyond Employers’ Defense Attorneys
Defense attorneys are not the only ones to show prejudice against victims. Positions of power in the workplace and various organizations can beget this toxic behavior and create a community of victims who are too afraid to make their voices heard. Re-traumatization of an event is considered secondary victimization, and public and private institutions need to take these types of claims seriously.
